The celebration that leads up to Ash Wednesday. In Poland, the traditional day for eating pączkii is the Thursday of the week before Ash Wednesday. What is usually referred to as Fat or Shrove Tuesday is celebrated in Poland by eating herring followed by a drink of vodka.

The day to celebrate before the repentant season of Lent. The Poles celebrate by eating pączki, that are more than your ordinary jelly doughnut. Traditionally the fillings were prune, rosehip jelly or poppyseed. Modern bakeries have their doughnuts filled with everything including bacon!
